It remains an elementary and non-mathematical introduction to molecular spectroscopy that emphasizes the overall unity of the subject and offers a pictorial perception rather than a mathematical description of the principles of spectroscopy. The most significant change in this edition is the addition of a new chapter on the spectroscopy of surfaces and solids. This topic has come of age in the years since the publication of the third edition and should become increasingly important in the future. The new chapter discusses the applications of techniques featured earlier in the text to the solid state and brings together related topics such as photoelectron and x-ray fluorescence. In addition, many new diagrams and end of chapter problems have been included, along with spectra that has been re-recorded on modern instruments and enhanced coverage of the applications of Fourier transform principles.
