Never read a graphic novel before, but have been interested in the 'space race' as it used to be known ever since I was a child. Beautifully drawn, superbly written, with reference to information declassified after the end of the Soviet Union. The author uses a mixture of historical characters and fictional/composite characters to tell the story of Laika, the first animal in orbit. He tells her story, from her life as a stray dog on the streets to space traveller. No attempt is made to sentimentalise the story, or to anthropomorphise the animal characters. Even though we all know the tragic end to the story, it still has an enormous emotional impact, even to someone like me, who is not really an animal lover. It definitely helps to read a little about the beginnings of the Soviet space program before you read 'Laika' if only to familiarise yourself with the sequence of events and the main historical characters. Would thoroughly recommend the book to adults or older children. Be warned though; several reviewers I have read online, said that the book reduced them to tears by the end!Read full review
