Product Information

OVER ONE MILLION COPIES SOLD 'A remarkable and hopeful portrait of the endless adaptability of the human brain' Oliver Sacks 'Utterly wonderful . . . without question one of the most important books about the brain you will ever read; yet it is beautifully written, immensely approachable, and full of humanity' Iain McGilchrist MA, author of The Master and His Emissary Meet the ninety-year-old doctor who is still practicing medicine, the stroke victim who learned to move and talk again and the woman with half a brain that rewired itself to work as a whole. All these people had their lives transformed by the remarkable discovery that our brains can repair themselves through the power of positive thinking. Here bestselling author, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Norman Doidge reveals the secrets of the cutting-edge science of 'neuroplasticity'. He introduces incredible case histories - blind people helped to see, IQs raised and memories sharpened - and tells the stories of the maverick scientists who are overturning centuries of assumptions about the brain. This inspiring book will leave you with a sense of wonder at the capabilities of the mind, and the self-healing power that lies within all of us.

  • Brilliant, practical tips amongst huge juicy chunks of detective work, marvellous

IIt has been a long time since I read a book so very full of useful insights and it is taking me a very long time to read, since I need to pause and digest all the new information. I'd recommend reading the Afterword first, since it explains why discoveries take so long to filter down to the doctor-speaks-to-patient level.

  • One of the best "brain" books I've read.....

Norman Doidge was one of those responsible for bringing to the attention of the general public the fact that brain plasticity, and neuroplasticity, not only existed, but made the treatment of many neurological disorders, diseases and dysfunctions accessible, possible and successful. This book, his 2nd, gives wonderful and wonderfully clear examples and explanations of just some of the areas where doctors, scientists and patients working together have achieved remarkable, and scientifically well-documented, positive results using creative applications of the effects of neuroplasticity. If you're at all interested in understanding this hugely important area of the revolution in medicine and brain health, read this book. A real eye-opener and a very enjoyable read.
