Billy Casper is a boy with nowhere to go and nothing to say; part of the limbo generation of school leavers too old for lessons and too young to know anything about the outside world. Post war working class life in the raw
This is a Working Class classic novel documenting much more than a boy's fascination with a wild creature but gives an insight into the immediate post war Northern working class existence with the values of the time highlighted. Teachers disinterest in pupils (in the main), bullying, jealousy and retribution.
