About this product

Product Information

Below Scotland's capital, hidden for almost two centuries, is a metropolis whose very existence was all but forgotten. For almost 250 years, Edinburgh was surrounded by a giant defensive wall. Unable to expand the city's boundaries, the burgeoning population built over every inch of square space. And when there was no more room, they began to dig down . . . Trapped in lives of poverty and crime, these subterranean dwellers existed in darkness and misery, ignored by the chroniclers of their time. It is only in the last few years that the shocking truth has begun to emerge about the sinister underground city.

  • A thoroughly good read

Following a discussion with friends with regards to the underground town of Edinburgh I was compelled to find out more so purchased this book. It was really interesting highlighting the development of the underground dwellings and the reasons surrounding them. It discussed the history of the times and development of Edinburgh through the ages. It discusses the myths and the facts of the underground town, even down to the suspected hauntings surrounding it. I really enjoyed reading this book. It was not too heavy and easy to understand. It was interesting to briefly learn about the history of Edinburgh and it's underground dwellings and to unearth the truths and myths that surround it. It made me laugh, comment, "well I never," "I didn't know that" and regularly required the need for me to enlighten my family with nuances and facts. Highly recommended. A thoroughly good read. Go on give it a go. You may surprise yourself and unearth that hidden quest for knowledge that you thought had wained.
