About this product

Product Information

Originally published in 1914, The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is a timeless story of Socialism, political awakenings and class struggle, told with a volatile mix of heartfelt rage and sly humour. The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists tells the story of a group of working men who are joined one day by Owen, a journeyman-prophet with a vision of a just society. Owen's spirited attacks on the greed and dishonesty of the capitalist system rouse his fellow men from their political quietism. It is both a masterpiece of wit and political passion and one of the most authentic novels of English working class life ever written. This enduring favourite is now reinvigorated by a smart new jacket and exclusive extra material as part of Perennial's Modern Classics line of reissues. Now its timeless message of justice, equality and reason will be introduced to a whole new generation of discerning readers.

  • A Book for Everyone’s Library.

A book that should be on the curriculum of every school. A wonderful period piece capturing the Edwardian age and the struggle of working folk within a cruel and heartless economic system. Interwoven in the narrative is a clear and compelling justiication of the Socialist ideal and one which reaches even those most hardened doubters that life can indeed be so different. A must read for anyone committed to the achievement of a better world.

  • Everyone should read this!

Fantastic book which explains through it's story the 'divide and conquer' strategy of employers towards a desperate workforce. Rings true to this day. One of the best books I have ever read - on a par with The Grapes of Wrath and in a similar vein.

  • Unfinished reading

I have not finished reading this yet, but interesting story of the times and conditions people lived with at that time. Seems people's personalities do not change. We still have the ruthless and greedy and the apathy by people in this day and age,

  • Shows hard working men working for a pittance and the bosses making all the money .

One if my favourite books , bought to replace a well worn out copy. Even though this book was, written years ago, its very relevant today .

  • Classic, compelling, current

Have you ever thought "I do far too much work for way too little recompense..." "I don't deserve to be treated like this..." "It is one rule for us and one rule for them..." yet in fact done nothing in a practical sense about these thoughts? Allow Robert Tressell to elucidate and explain this phenomena and much else besides. A seminal work that quite simply cannot be read and absorbed without having a profound effect upon the reader.
