  • Excellent history of the game.

A fascinating history of the game in its social context, exploring the development of modern cricket from its origins in Hambledon in the late eighteenth century. Only by tracing its history can you understand the odd structure of the game with MCC at its apex for so long, and the institution of the amateur/professional distinction. There are inevitably in such a lengthy work a few errors (Barry Richards and Gordon Greenidge played for Hampshire not Sussex). He obviously has an animus against some players such as geoffrey boycott who gets attacked at several points. Some of the summarising of the political context is rather questionable and not altogether well integrated with the cricket history. But overall very good.
