This is the forgotten story of the million white Europeans, snatched from their homes and taken in chains to the great slave markets of North Africa to be sold to the highest bidder. Ignored by their own governments, and forced to endure the harshest of conditions, very few lived to tell the tale. Using the firsthand testimony of a Cornish cabin boy named Thomas Pellow, Giles Milton vividly reconstructs a disturbing, little known chapter of history. Pellow was bought by the tyrannical sultan of Morocco who was constructing an imperial pleasure palace of enormous scale and grandeur, built entirely by Christian slave labour.

Product Information

As his personal slave, he would witness first-hand the barbaric splendour of he imperial court, as well as experience the daily terror of a cruel regime. Gripping, immaculately researched, and brilliantly realised, WHITE GOLD reveals an explosive chapter of popular history, told with all the pace and verve of one of our finest historians.

A fascinating and entertaining insight into history.

One of the most interesting and surprising stories about the history of North Africa. Imagine being in a village in Cornwall and suddenly being confronted by scimitar-wielding barbarians and being taken away to the slave markets of Algeria and Morocco. A fascinating insight into history.

    Apt

I found this book very informative, it was well written, and the author had obviously done a lot of research. I do feel though that it was marketed wrongly because it gave the impression the whole book was about one slave from Cornwall, where piracy from Morocco, Algiers etc. by Moors, was common practice. in fact apart from his name being mentioned briefly in the first chapters, he didn't really make much of an appearance until later in the book. The first part of the book was more about the Sultans, and the mass treatment (which was barbaric) of the slaves from Europe. Also how the Sultans, took advantage of our kings at the time, by promising to release English slaves for vast amount so money, and war equipment, and then tearing up peace treaties. I am not finding fault with the book, just the information on the content. I would highly recommend this book to people who think slavery just involved black people, slavery involved most races, colours and creed. Slavery was wrong then, and is wrong now, but what happened in history should be learnt from not hidden away and destroyed.

  • Fascinating book on a compelling subject.

Fascinating book on a compelling subject. Slavery is as old as mankind itself and should be acknowledged and challenged in every iteration.

An important part of the whole that is too often airbrushed out of history.

  • Another truth

Trying to get rid of the past is counter productive. This balabces out some of the current narrative
