In this profound ecological fable, a mysterious plague has destroyed the vast majority of the human race. Isherwood Williams, one of the few survivors, returns from a wilderness field trip to discover that civilization has vanished during his absence. Eventually he returns to San Francisco and encounters a female survivor who becomes his wife. Around them and their children a small community develops, living like their pioneer ancestors, but rebuilding civilization is beyond their resources, and gradually they return to a simpler way of life.

  • Planet Earth retains the ability to support life even after all modern technology has failed.

I read this book decades ago and it made a great impression on me.. It gives an imaginative but believable account of what might happen if most of the world's population died of a virus or plague, and how the survivors coped, when, over a period of time, food ran out and every day equipment failed. A brilliant book.

  • Good read - paints pictures in your mind (as every well written book should)!!

Great read - does go 'flat' in a few places but apart from this I would recommend it.
