About this product

Product Information

Lines may divide us, but hope will unite us . . .Nine-year-old Bruno knows nothing of the Final Solution and the Holocaust. He is oblivious to the appalling cruelties being inflicted on the people of Europe by his country. All he knows is that he has been moved from a comfortable home in Berlin to a house in a desolate area where there is nothing to do and no one to play with. Until he meets Shmuel, a boy who lives a strange parallel existence on the other side of the adjoining wire fence and who, like the other people there, wears a uniform of striped pyjamas.Bruno's friendship with Shmuel will take him from innocence to revelation. And in exploring what he is unwittingly a part of, he will inevitably become subsumed by the terrible process.

  • Compelling read.

Highly recommended. WW2 atrocity seen through the eyes of an innocent young boy. Easy read in terms of its simplicity of words, but mature readers will read through the lines of what need not be graphically written. I'm not sure of the recommended age range, but my 8 year old and I read it together. Just like the two young children in the book, my child read a lot of this through innocent eyes which made it even more a poignant message to me. Beautifully written.

  • I read it before going to the concentration camp to get a feeling. A tough experience but we need to learn from our past so it never happens again

  • Just as good as the film

This is a sad tale a little different than the film but a very good read - just about the right length for a novel - very accurate historical narration

  • Intriguing and repelling

As a class book for Y6 introduces from an oblique angle and child perspective Germany in WW2 and the issue of concentration camps.
