Product Information
The nine canvases known as The Triumph of Caesar are considered fine achievements in Italian Renaissance art, and they were much admired during Mantegna's lifetime. First acquired by Charles 1 in 1629 when he purchased a large part of the collections formed by the Gonzaga family, the canvases have been hung at Hampton Court Palace since the probable date of their arrival in England in 1630. Until 1689 they were housed in the King's Gallery of the Tudor Palace, but following the rebuilding during the reign of William III and Mary II they were moved to various other parts of the Palace before their installation in the Lower Orangery in 1919. Eight of the canvases are illustrated here together with a summary of the artist's life.Product Identifiers
