The first of a trilogy this book about military action in the future is fast paced with strong characters. The future of Earth is off-world, with a group of planets making up the whole of Humanity. Each world offers its own particular services and the Dorsai train mercenaries. Others provide computers, or food, and other manufactured goods. The story is really about the Tactics of Mistake, a philosophy by which individual Dorsai soldiers are trained up far beyond the capabilities of normal humans. While not invincible, each Dorsai can take the place of ten normal humans. The only problem is whether the Dorsai world can afford the problem. Highly; recommended "hard" science fiction set in the far future.
