It suggests a glossary of photography, but is quite comprehensive in detail, certainly exceeds the bar set by the title!

  • Essential reading for the modern photographer

Whatever equipment you use, whatever style you adopt as a photographer, understanding the basics of photography are absolutely essential to achieving a high standard in your images. Amongst many publications of similar vintage, what the text sets out to do is convey an understanding of photography as a science, skill, and art form, and the reader would be unwise to dismiss the content for its age. Regardless of modern technology, the basics of photography remain the same, and even with the latest photo editing software, unless you can grasp what the camera does, you cannot establish a base-line for what you are trying to do, hence the plethora of very obviously edited images we see every day. I would recommend the reader reads it twice, once to learn about the science and skill, and a second time with an interpretive eye, to establish for themselves, the realms of flexibility that taking a photograph can impart on the final image. Anyone can take a photograph with a modern automatic camera set to "P" mode, but if you can understand how to take the photograph yourself, an extra five minutes spent interpreting the scene, and applying control to the actual taking process, will save the reader hours in the editing suite to produce the image required!
