"The Weirdstone of Brisingamen" by Alan Garner is a paperback book published by HarperCollins in 1983. Part of the Lions S. series, it is a 224-page novel written in English for children and young adults. The book follows a young boy named Grian as he discovers the ancient and powerful Weirdstone of Brisingamen, which leads him on a magical journey filled with adventure and danger. With its captivating story and engaging characters, this book is sure to transport readers to a world of fantasy and excitement.
Excellent children's fantasy book, grounded in British myth. Compelling, sometimes eerie. This was Alan Garner's first book, and he him came to feel that technically it wasn't as good a piece of literature as some of his later work. Generations of children disagreed however, and the fact that it's still in print almost sixty years on speaks volumes.
Quote from Philip Pullman ('His Dark Materials') - "Garner is indisputably the great originator, the most important British writer of fantasy since Tolkien, and in many respects better than Tolkien, because deeper and more truthful... Any country except Britain would have long ago recognised his importance, and celebrated it with postage stamps and statues and street-names."
I was given this book aged 15; and was so struck with it that it stayed with me until aged 50, when I bought and read it again. It's scary, as a teenager, to read it. So, I had to re-read it while mature. I still couldn't read the end, since I still remember what happens. Beautifully descriptive, it will strike sensitive souls.
This review has a long story behind it , but lets just say I read it when I was in school with the whole class and I'm looking forward to see how it has aged.
It sort of like a Harry potter, GL Hf
