She first arrived there in 1928 and continued to visit the country throughout her life leading tours and on her own expeditions until her death on a Himalayan mountain in 1986. In 1985 she took her granddaughter on one of her legendary expeditions and six years after Penelope's death, Imogen Lycett-Green returned to India to retrace the steps of that unforgettable trip.
