The second, improved version of the Adafruit Motor-Shield offers the easiest and fastest way to control DC motors and stepper motors. Up to 4 DC motors or 2 stepper motors can be controlled. The L293D Darlington drivers have been replaced by TB6612 MOSFETs, which offer an output current of 1.2 A per channel. (For about. Current peaks of up to 3 A are possible for 20 ms.) There is an extra PWM driver on the board for motor control, which is controlled via the I2C interface. This leaves the PWM outputs of the Arduino free and with SDA & SCL only two pins are required to control several motors. The I2C address can be set via 5 address-select pins and thus enables the use of up to 32 stackable shields, ie the control of up to 64 stepper motors or 128 DC motors.
