During the night of 27th April 1944, Exercise Tiger, a rehearsal for the D-day landings, took place off the coast of Devon. This supposedly routine exercise experienced a series of fatal blunders that allowed German E boats to intercept the convoy of landing craft. By dawn, nearly 1000 American servicemen, many young and untrained, had lost their lives. This story explains how and why the tragedy happened, and explores the elaborate cover-up that later took place. It is also the tale of one man's obsession to honour the memory of those Americans who died so needlessly.

Poignant, thought provoking, incredible book !!
A thought provoking book which tells the story of the tragic loss of nearly 1,000 young American Soldiers on an ill fated training exercise in 1944, whilst preparing for D Day. And the story of how one mans dream and determination helped recovered a lost WW2 Sherman Tank from the seas off Slapton in Devon, to place it as a memorial to the fallen of Excercise Tiger in April 1944. An incredible story, a battle of red tape to finally honour the dead GI's and their sacrifice for our freedom.

Compelling read.
Very Interesting account of a very tragic incident. It deals with this initially and then goes on to relate to the recovery of the Sherman tank. I met the late author at Slapton years ago and chatted to him whilst he was selling his book near the tank. However, lent my copy to someone who didn’t return it, hence the purchase of a replacement!
