About this product

Product Information

At the outbreak of the Second World War the 20-year-old John Worsley enlisted as a midshipman and during off-duty moments sketched his fellow sailors and the incidental scenes of life at sea. Having survived the sinking of his first ship he was, in 1943, made an official naval war artist and covered the invasion of the Italian mainland and later the Salerno landing; after a brief spell in Malta he moved on to record the Naval front opening up in the Adriatic before being captured by the Germans. As a prisoner he continued depicting the prisoner of war life around him and helped in producing forged identity papers. Then, most ingenious of all, he created Albert - a dummy to fill space at the daily roll calls, in order to conceal the escape of a prisoner. This is his account of those experiences.
