Unbelievable for the price.
I had read about this mic on a few review sites and thought that it was a no-brainer for the price. It cost almost nothing. How bad could it be? Well, it isn't bad. In fact it's great!! I have about 10 mic's in my locker and for MY voice, it is just about perfect. I own the C414, Solid Tube, TLM 102, MXL and a bunch condenser mics. I try them all before I push record and every time I end up choosing the AT2020. It just flatters my voice. I do use a Focusrite Red 6 into an EL-8 distressor and then to the recorder - so I have a high quality vocal chain. But the AT2020 somehow seems to reduce the nasal grainy quality of my voice. I suspect a slight drop around 5 but it does not sound dull.
If you have $100 and are not sure if your vocal problems are in your Pre-amp, hold off dropping $1,500 on a new pre and try this mic. I have used it with a Aphex 107 as well and it was just as solid. I don't know how well it will hold up to stacking vocals one on top of the other. I used to double (or triple!) my voice because my voice just sounded bad to me. There is nothing like a harmony or double voice to hide a poor sounding vocal take - but with this mic, I find that a single voice with some compression, a little verb and some delay sits just right in my mix. Weird. And it cost me all of $99.
It is enough to make you re-think the line "you get what you pay for".
