  • Great writing but needs more maps

This is a superb account of the war in Burma, written by the general in charge of the whole campaign over a 3 year period. It gives an incredible insight into the conditions the men lived and fought in, the type of fighting, the logistical nightmares, the shortages and the improvisation. It is also an interesting insight into the author and the difficulties of being in command in such conditions. Where it falls down - badly - is that there are simply not enough maps and the ones that are there are of such poor quality as to be virtually useless. There are masses of details on troop movements of many divisions, brigades etc but without a map it's virtually meaningless and impossible to keep track of. The overall strategy is easy enough to work out but the various tactical movements are not. It is still a great read, and easy reading, but if only the publishers could add a LOT more, and FAR better quality maps then this would get a 5 star rating

Can be heavy going, not a leisure reading, but so full of information and details. I bought this book to give me more insight of the conditions my father endured during army career. He never spoke of his wartime service. I have had some information from his brothers and friends. Please stick with this book, enlightening, so worth the effort.
