About this product

Product Information

In an age of treachery and turmoil, brutal murder brings the ultimate test of faith... Henry VIII has proclaimed himself Supreme Head of the Church and the country is waking up to savage new laws, rigged trials and the greatest network of informers ever seen. Under the order of Thomas Cromwell, a team of commissioners is sent through the country to investigate the monasteries. There can only be one outcome: the monasteries are to be dissolved. But on the Sussex coast, at the monastery of Scarnsea, events have spiralled out of control. Cromwell's Commissioner Robin Singleton has been found dead, his head severed from his body. His horrific murder is accompanied by equally sinister acts of sacrilege - a black cockerel sacrificed on the alter, and the disappearance of Scarnsea's Great Relic. Dr Matthew Shardlake, lawyer and long-time supporter of Reform, has been sent by Cromwell into this atmosphere of treachery and death. But Shardlake's investigation soon forces him to question everything he hears, and everything that he intrinsically believes...

  • Most favourable review

Compelling characters and fascinanting time in history.

Have not finished the book yet but already proving to be a compelling read. The author (recently passed away) has created some notable characters in a time in history he clearly has studied well. In addition to enjoying the story I have learnt much about the time of Henry VIII and Cromwell. The book itself is a reasonable quality and at a very good price was great value.

  • Most critical review

A disappolinting storyline, and a less than attractive writing style.

Although the author had good recommendations, I didn't rate his style. Its a sort of "history" book novel, but unless you are a lover of history, its not for you! I have read hundreds of novels and non-fiction books in my life and this was one of the least satisfying.

  • Couldn't put it down.

I didn't think that historical novels would ever be for me - until I read this . It's brilliant. Wonderfully well written, so atmospheric. I enjoyed it tremendously. I shall now be reading the others in the Shardlake Series.

  • Excellent book.

This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. Very compelling and excellent characters. So good I have since read 4 of the existing 6 in the incomplete series. I am now reading book 5. Definately recommended.

  • Compelling recount of Tudor Britain.

I actually started with this series back to front by reading first "Sovereign" which is also an excellent recount of the Tudor fracas, I thought that I may be disappointed after this third book of the series but actually "Dissolution" was even better.

  • A fantastic read

I have read all but one of the Shardlake series and I bought this as a gift for someone. The series is a fantastic read. The storylines are compelling, complex and very well woven into the history of the time. But the 'small mans' history of these cruel and turbulant times times of great times, as well as the great political upheavals are vibrant and alive. These books are very well researched and considered.

  • A remarkable book that makes you feel you are living at the time of King Henry V111.

This is the first of a series of books featuring Matthew Shardlake. The stories are compelling and difficult to put down once started. I have previously read Dissolution about 8 years ago but look forward to re-reading it again.
