Told through a complex series of interweaving letters, Clarissa is a richly ambiguous study of a fatally attracted couple and a work of astonishing power and immediacy.     This book delivers! (careful - spoilers)

    SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS: This is a fascinating account of a young girl who escapes a forced marriage, only to be caged and raped by another suitor. Amazingly, this is also a highly entertaining book. At 1500 pages, it is more of a companion than a novel. If you love 18th century literature - this is a must read. Not only for English majors and gender studies scholars!
