Compared to the work of George Bain, Meehan's book is a genuine "how to" with step by step instructions of how to freehand Celtic knotworks, key patterns, spirals and lettering. Some of the accompanying prose is a bit flowery, but overall this is a great way to learn. Be warned, though. It's a great book and there's all the information you need to create Celtic designs, but even with all of this information, it requires a lot of work from the reader to get the best out of it. If you are not prepared to practice the book won't be worth anything to you. You can argue that in these days of computer graphics the art of hand lining designs is dead. Maybe, maybe not. Buying this book and working from it will give you a feel that no computer graphics package will, and if you're an electronic artist, this will broaden your view and scope in a way that nothing else will.Read full review
Best thing since sliced bread. How the monks produced illuminated letters and images defies imagination when all they had was a dowel for a straight edge and guess what a compass/dividers to develop such small designs. All by eye and hand, no computers or magnifying glasses.
