This story of ethnic warfare, multi-racial coalitions and shifting alliances has been ignored by many who wish the culture didn't exist, but is a history of the city nonetheless. — Rick Kogan, Chicago Tribune -- Rick Kogan Chicago Tribune .

About this product

Product Information

Based on original research, Compliments of Chicagohoodz analyzes the unique visual language and graphics of Chicago's gangs, drawing upon decades of inter- views, documentation, and collecting of memorabilia, and featuring commentary from gang members and Chicago artists. The practice of creating and distributing gang business ( compliment ) cards was popular in Chicago for over fifty years. These displayed the organization and branch, its active and fallen members, and rivalries. This book tells the stories behind the names, bringing the reader closer to the individuals who created, owned, and added their personal touches to the card as it passed from hand to hand. James Jinx O'Connor's photographic documentation of gang graffiti and members captures a lost era of large-scale color promotional murals and an extraordinary style distinct within street art. The book also explores other forms of representation including varsity-style sweaters, patches, and drawings. Through these images, Chicagohoodz traces the development and consolidation of the neighborhood street organization from doo-wop to hip-hop, from greasers to gangster rap, from dances, bands, and softball teams to racketeering, narcotics trafficking, and domestic terror.

  • Amazing read with a lot of pictures

If you are interested in Chicago's Gang History, then this book is a must have. A lot of pictures throughout the book, with descriptions given for most of them, information about the gangs and clubs going back to the 1950s greaser era, information about the author and how and where he got the information from, information from gang members them selves and information on the locations and styles of the gangs, from the style of writing they used, the murals they put up in their territories, the sweaters and other gang apparel they wore and why those sweaters and murals faded out for the most part during the 1980s. The only issue that I had with this book is that it mentions a gang called the Taylor St Dukes a few times when talking about the old school white greaser gangs and even gets a lot of the information from a former Taylor St Duke, but there is no pictures of the Taylor St Dukes anywhere in the book. This only bothers me so much because I am a Taylor St Jouster, which was a off shoot gang of the Taylor St Dukes and I have been looking for information and pictures of Dukes for a long time, but have not managed to find any anywhere, so when I heard them mentioned a few times during the old school chapter of the book and that somebody who helped with that information and gave quotes himself in parts of the book was a former Duke himself, I thought I might have finally got to see some pictures of them. Apart from my own personal issue with this book, I give it a 10/10 for detail and been an amazing book to read about this subject matter.
