A welcome release
Even if some critics don’t rate their studio albums from the 1980s as highly as most of their 1970s work, Genesis were at their absolute peak in the early 80s when they toured the ‘Duke’ and ‘Abacab’ albums. ‘Three Sides Live’ mostly documents the Abacab tour but there’s a few tracks performed from ‘Duke’ and some even earlier. Three Sides Live is the best representation available of Genesis in a live setting. Tracks like ‘Behind The Lines’, ‘Duchess’ and ‘Abacab’ are even better here than their already excellent studio versions. The ‘In the Cage’ medley is the absolute highlight of the set, which also includes a terrific version of ‘The Cinema Show’ and is a fantastic showcase for Phil Collins drumming alongside Chester Thompson. If you already have the album the DVD is a perfect companion. Mostly recorded in November 1981, it features some commentary from the three group members as well as some performances not on the original LP. Highly recommended, and this is much more entertaining than the Invisible Touch tour and subsequent tours in the 1990s. The Mama tour of late 1983, which was equally outstanding, is yet to be released on DVD and would be a most welcome release. Until then there’s no better way to see or hear Genesis on tour than ‘Three Sides Live’.
