ReviewsRanked #45 in Mojo's "Top 50 Punk Albums" - "...The Raincoats' debut was punk's DIY aesthetic writ large...", 4 stars out of 5 -- "Standout tracks such as 'The Void' and 'In Love' portray a Velvets-heavy heart, the latter's violin straight out of John Cale's finest box of scratchy tricks...", 3 stars out of 5 -- "Their energised art-folk songs, such as 'You're A Million,' or the newly added, snotty 'Fairytale In The Supermarket,' have an itchy quality that continues to intrigue.", (9) -"...Finds the Raincoats at Their Sparkiest...", "Their warped, deadpan cover of 'Lola' by The Kinks is deliciously subverted....Magnificently timeless -- to be unearthed and taken delight in.", Ranked #9 in Spin's "50 Most Essential Punk Records" - "...Clattering, chaotic, shrill, funny, and furious, it's the sound of 4 women inthrall to their own premenstrual vision..."
Formed from the ashes of The Slits who had rather lost their way, Raincoats carried on the tradition of loose post punk from a feminist position The album is listed in Rolling Stone's Top 500albums of all time and while I think this is a tad generous it has to be admitted that when the band 'get it right' they hit some bullseyes. In Love is the standout track...almost Velvet Underground in its melancholy. Fairytale in Supermarket reminds listeners
of Slits at their best...and so it goes.
Quality good, pressed on heavyweight grey vinyl.
The ideal gift for yourself or partner with love of punk/post punk but a record collection that only covers the better known bands of the era.
If you have not seen the movie 20th Century Women look for it and settle in, it's a great time.
Not only because I'm only a year older than the protagonist in 1977-78, more because it is
such a true movie. I had most of the experiences that were in the movie at that time.
The Raincoats are featured via vinyl record in a scene in which a older woman is sharing their
music with the younger protagonist. His mother (the amazingly talented Annette Benning) walks
in and asks,"they know they're not good, right?" The response to the question is the reason you
should see this movie; it's a social lesson. Art and talent, how it happens. It speaks to the
era.
