About this product

Product Information

Joel McCrea stars in Preston Sturges' classic comedy/drama as John Sullivan, a successful Hollywood director of frothy comedies. But for his next project, he wants to film the book Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? (the Coen Brothers paid homage to Sturges with their 2000 comedy), a searing indictment of the poverty of the Depression. The studio heads aren't so sure but he sets out on the road (trailed by the studio publicity bandwagon), manages to lose them, and meets a failed actress, known only as The Girl, Veronica Lake (in just her second major film). The pair enjoy adventures on the road and fall in love and she learns of his true identity. Then, by a twist of fate, Sullivan is declared dead (the corpse is a hobo who stole his hoes with his name in) while the real Sullivan begins serving time on a chain gang for a minor assault. He's released after proving his identity, and the studio implores him to make a gritty film based on his experiences, but Sullivan has learnt a valuable lesson on his travels.
