  • Steppenwolf by H Hesse - a WONDERFUL book

Especially apt if you're interested in the misfits and lone wolves of this world, or indeed are one ... but I can't see how anyone would not love this book. Deeply interesting and informative; compassionate, full of humour and brilliantly written, & last but not least: beautifully concise, you could even read it in one hit - just like the author's hero, Mozart, but in book form rather than music. I could recommend this book to anyone 16 years old or more, but perhaps not if you are a literalist / fundamentalist believer, in that case you might find this too strong meat for your taste. However, I would stress that the adult themes are never abused nor introduced merely for shock value. Hesse conveys a very old message still valuable for today, the beginning of which is: the human personality is, with only very rare exceptions, not a unity, but a multiplicity. Read this book if you think you can grapple with the consequences; or if not, stay happily asleep. :o)
