About this product

Product Information

Wentworth is in Yorkshire and was surrounded by seventy collieries employing tens of thousands of men. It is the finest and largest Georgian house in Britain and belonged to the Fitzwilliam family. It is England's forgotten palace and belonged to Britain's richest aristocrats. Black Diamonds tells the story of its demise: family feuds, forbidden love, class war, and a tragic and violent death played their part. But coal, one of the most emotive issues in twentieth-century British politics, lies at its heart. This is the extraordinary story of how the fabric of English society shifted beyond recognition in fifty turbulent years in the twentieth century.

  • A true story that beats “Downton Abbey” all ends up

I must admit to having a personal interest in the story in Black Diamonds as I am related by marriage to the Wentworth-Fitzwilliam family. However, bias asiide, the story is well written and researched, covering not just the history of one family in the early and mid 20th century, but it’s place in the world at the time. A world of change and uncertainty- for everyone. A real page-turner that proves (to me at least) that real life cannot be beaten when it comes to drama and suspense, joy and tragedy. Fiction lends its props from facts and it is facts (as in this book) that means in this story at least there is no need for fiction. Highly recommended.

  • Great find/buy

Purchased for a relative abroad. For something NLA new it appeared to be in un-used condition (maybe a 'second' as the illustrated pages were not finely cropped). She will be delighted
