Long in chapters but engrossing and well written!
This is the first book in the Mitchell and Markby mysteries written in 1991. The chapters are too long in my opinion and could have been shorter, but I did forgive it because it was such a good story and an excellent mystery. It introduces Meredith Mitchell and Alan Markby, her friend and later boyfriend. Meredith has been invited to a wedding - her cousin's daughter is going to get married. On her arrival at the village of Westerfield, not far from Banbury, she finds some strange objects by the main gate: an ox heart, a threatening letter and a disfigured doll. Someone in the family is being blackmailed and threatened. She is persuaded to keep the facts secret and not tell the police! Then Peter Lorrimer's cat goes missing - it is later found dead - it has been poisioned. Then Peter Lorrimer is found dead - also poisoned! Together, after meeting each other, Mitchell and Markby investigate and find out the murderer is and how these deaths are linked together. There are various twists and turns with an unexpected ending!
