I started buying up David Mitchell books because of Cloud Atlas, SUCH a creatively unique book. This is not disappointing in any way, but in my opinion it IS a tougher ride to stay on. Flipping between miyake's (the protagonist) imagination and reality, and throwing in a historical diary and manga-like yakuza violence in modern-day Japan, it's tied together by the coming of age story, and beautifully linked by Mr Mitchell. I personally love the way he writes, it resonates with me, and he has a beautiful and poignant turn of phrase. About halfway through I thought it was going to be a straightforward story with none of the usual Mitchell trickeryfoolery, but the the other elements came into play and gave it another few layers again! This is by no means a thorough review, there are SO many elements in the book that I've only had brought to my attention after reading it, but if you want to read more about it, Amazon has some very informative reviews of it, much deeper than mine! Roll on the next David Mitchell book. I'll be buying it for sure.Read full review
