Product Information
This is a dramatic story of the transport of Holocaust survivors to Palestine by volunteer American seamen in the face of strong British opposition. The tale is recounted by the American captain of the Paducah , an ageing US gunboat acquired as war surplus by agents of an organization running illegal immigration operations. Captain Rudolph Patzert picks up the story on New York harbour in May 1947, at the start of the Paducah 's six-month voyage, and ends it with his own arrival in Palestine and escape from British detention. Constant surveillance by the Royal Navy and Air Force, uncharted mines in the Black Sea, and informants bent on sabotaging the mission, increased the dangers of the perilous journey and add a tension to Patzert's account. Surrounded by British ships for its final run into Palestine, the Paducah didn't have a chance, and the 1500 passengers and crew were captured and taken to internment camps on Cyprus. Rudolph Patzert served as a captain in the US Merchant Marines in World War II, seeing combat in the Atlantic and Mediterranean theatres. After the war he was recruited by the Palestine Jewish underground to command the Paducah .Product Identifiers
