  • Aviation / Engineering as described by someone who was there.

An excellent book, covers the R100 airship which the author worked on and the related disastrous R101 (which he did not). Also the beginnings of 'Airspeed' - which is a far as I've got. A good read, recommended.

  • An interesting life

Shute is the author who got me, aged 15 to actually finish reading a book from cover to cover. I was a very reluctant reader.

  • very readable

  • R100 rant

Shute is a very interesting man, but he let his emotions about the R101 and R100 project colour his judgement in writing this sparse autobiography.

  • A perfect look at a great writer

Nevil Shute, at his best. Not spinning a yarn, but telling his own story of his early life, the 1914-18 war and how he moved on to work on the R100 and R101. A fascinating background to a fabulous writer.
