First of all, this book is all about the basics. The army has tried and tested methods of getting their recruits fit. There's no gimmicks, no tricks, no shortcuts; the army has no product to sell. There's no secret to getting fit - you just need to put in the effort and commitment. Don't be put off by the fact it is an army book - it doesn't expect you to run for hours with bricks in your burgen or have you crawling through ditches! Everything in this book is do-able, and the programs build your fitness up progressively over time.
I had bought this in 2009 but it got lost in a move, the replacement is a larger book. I never got to use the book the first time, but it arrived again yesterday. I have read the book and reviewed the programs, the first thing I would say is that its comprehensive! This book looks and reads as a comprehensive all inclusive program designed with realistic expectations, so I feel confident that following the programs will result in a healthier me! I also feel confident that those who put this program together weren't relying on the reader being of super human fitness or having incredible physical acumen. Having re-involved myself in training after a long time out, I know that there will be a point at which inexperience will prevent me from coordinating all of the ideas and knowledge available! Its at this point the 12 week programs will prove invaluable. The hardest thing to do after getting off the couch and completing your 5k is to recognize that there is a considerable no mans land between being moderately active and fully fit, this book is most definitely a bridge to continued fitness development.Read full review
