  • Why everyone should read Affluenza by Oliver James

Once I started to read this book, I was hooked. It puts into words what I have always felt. In today's society, success is measured by material wealth and power. But does this make for a good and happy society? No. Why? Because it neglects the basic needs (as identified in Maslow's hierarchy) and engenders negative competition and selfishness. This book highlights the problems that the continued need for more (and it's inherent individualism), detracts from the joy of being content and part of a cohesive (and happy) society. I have discussed the contents of the book with friends and family and bought this one as a present for my daughter-in-law. I would recommend it to everyone, and possibly as part of the school curriculum. Maybe then, society might persuade governments and other power houses to rethink what society really needs.
