About this product

Product Information

Just as there is a fundamental difference in the use of the words naked and nude, the unclothed body can evoke a feeling of delight or shame, serving as a symbol of contradictory concepts--Beauty and Indecency. This book is devoted to the paintings of nudes by great artists. This beautifully produced book will not only appeal to art lovers but will also make a great collection.

This is the second of this series that I have bought. The other was on Picasso. The positives are the very large number of colour illustrations, full painting on one side of the open page and 3 enlarged details on the other, along with the text. The text, in both cases, a well written essay on the subject. Sadly, it bears no relationship to the painting you are looking at and may refer to paintings that are elsewhere or not in the book at all. Numbered references would be enormously useful and just an obvious thing to have done. It is possible, with a lot of tedious referring back to the index, to see if the artist or painting being discussed is in the book, but really!! They are a bargain series but could be so much better if they took themselves and their readers seriously.
