My son has 2 Alascan Malamute dogs that have long soft coats that moult regularly. I thought it would be fun to see if the heaps of surplus hair could be used to knit scarves etc. which would be very warm. This book seemed to be the answer. Detailed instructions are given for collecting & washing the "wool" and then how to spin the yarn ready for knitting or weaving fabric. There are then some nice patterns for various garments including jackets, scarves, hats, gloves etc. and even a dog sweater - which seems ironic! If you don't have a spinning wheel or other equipment needed, there is a useful list of contacts who could spin it for you. There is also a chapter on how to care for your finished garments. Obviously not all dogs have suitable coats, so there is also a chapter on which dogs are best - several of the patterns use Newfoundland or Golden Retriever which would have natural colour. Not a book for everyone, but if like me you have a source of lots of dog hair and you like knitting, it does make interesting reading. As it says on the cover - Better a sweater from a dog you know and love than a sheep you'll never meet.Read full review
