Product Information
This is a detailed description of the techniques and principles of the sacred art of Tibetan scroll painting, and is the distillation of the authors' research carried out over a period of 10 years, during which they made five journeys to Nepal and India and learned from some 20 traditional painters. The authors describe and illustrate every step in the painting of a thangka; preparation of the surface, composition of the subject, pigments used and the method of applying them, and even the making of the brush. The continuity of the tradition is highlighted in places by the translation of relevant passages from earlier written sources. Line drawings and photographs illustrate in detail the main steps in technique and the book concludes with an appendix by Robert Beer on the principal symbols and motifs of Tibetan painting and the proportions for the main deities.Product Identifiers
