About this product

Product Information

Some of the most savage war in world history was waged on the American Plains from 1865 to 1879. As settlers moved west following the Civil War, they found powerful Indian tribes barring the way. When the U.S. Army intervened, a bloody and prolonged conflict ensued. Drawing heavily from diaries, letters, and memoirs from American Plains settlers, historian Thomas Goodrich weaves a spellbinding tale of life and death on the prairie, told in the timeless words of the participants themselves. Scalp Dance is a powerful, unforgettable epic that shatters modern myths. Within its pages, the reader will find a truthful account of Indian warfare as it occurred.

  • Nineteenth Century War on the American Plains as it really was.

I already have this book, having first bought it back in 2008. This particular purchase was for a good friend for Christmas. He is a fan of westerns, as in good westerns, and has a particular interest in the US Cavalry-Indian (Native Americans) Wars of the late 19th Century. I remember this book being an excellent introduction to the subject and one that did not shy away from the dark side of the conflict and the atrocities committed by both sides, some make for difficult reading. The history of the campaigns and battles, the tribes and key personalities are all handled well and the story is told as I believe it really was, good and bad on both sides. Thus, no focus on a modern Hollywood perspective of evil cavalry slaughtering peaceful noble 'savages', in fact it highlights the life and courage of soldiers and plains indians alike. I have other larger more detailed books now on the subject, but for anyone interested in delving into this history I can heartily recommend this book as an ideal primer.
