Moreover, the book moves toward a more nuanced understanding of the realities and effects of counterinsurgency warfare. The Title is Defeating Mau Mau, Creating Kenya : Counterinsurgency, Civil War, and Decolonization.
A well-researched and balanced book looking at loyalist Kikuyu in the 1950s
This was a very informative book based on detailed research by Daniel Branch, a Professor of African History. The start and end of the book were the most interesting parts for me, in which views about the Mau Mau conflict were set in a historical and political context. The well-known works by Elkins (a "scolding" book, which gets somewhat panned) and the rather better Anderson's 'History of the Hanged' are discussed, along with the political significance of the date of their publication. Prof Branch’s book is detailed and dispels the common myth of a war between Kikuyu nationalists and brutal colonialist oppressors. It shows the important role of Kikuyu loyalists as a "home guard". The book does a good job of showing how the actions of players was a result of the situation that people found themselves in. The history of colonialism in Kenya is discussed and helpful efforts are made to connect this to the Mau Mau revolt. There are lots of supporting references and a few black and white photographs. I gained a lot of information from the book, and it is a useful reference. However, I did not find the book really flowed and was pleased when the last chapter brought matters up to date.
