Someday a great novel will be written about Alzheimer’s disease - but this isn't it. The premise WAS interesting. The central character’s story is told in a series of flashbacks while his present time mind deteriorates. The best parts of the book happen towards the end when the truly terrifying symptoms of the disease kick in and his memory is all but obliterated. I did feel that Harvey brought to this section a suitable degree of dread. However, earlier parts of the book are confusing and, at times, very pretentious and wordy. My main criticism, though, would be that the main character is, in my opinion, not a very nice person and, ultimately, I had little sympathy for him. Disappointing.
Beautifully written and observed. A gentle slow (in a good way) book. I delight in the language and clarity
