About this product

Product Information

Frank, no ordinary sixteen-year-old, lives with his father outsIde a remote Scottish village. Their life is, to say the least, unconventional. Frank's mother abandoned them years ago: his elder brother Eric is confined to a psychiatric hospital; and his father measures out his eccentricities on an imperial scale. Frank has turned to strange acts of violence to vent his frustrations. In the bizarre daily rituals there is some solace. But when news comes of Eric's escape from the hospital Frank has to prepare the ground for his brother's inevitable return - an event that explodes the mysteries of the past and changes Frank utterly. Iain Banks' celebrated first novel is a work of extraordinary originality, imagination and horrifying compulsion: horrifying, because it enters a mind whose realities are not our own, whose values of life and death are alien to our society; and compulsive, because the humour and compassion of that mind reach out to us all.

    Okay

Not my cup of tea. I heard Martin Clunes mention it on television. I bought it out of curiosity and read it all the way through. Martin Clunes had more or less given away the ending but I wasn’t sure if he was telling the truth or joking. My wife is now going to read it, for the same reason that I did. I haven’t told her the ending, let her make her own mind up.

  • Read it if you haven't eaten yet !

I hesitate to recommend this book to everyone, you certainly need a strong stomach to turn the pages. I have read it years ago so it wasn't so much of a shock. I'm not sure year 9 school children should be reading this as suggested. Well written, imaginativel and quite disgusting.

  • Always worth another look.

A book I read some time ago. It started a series of Iain Banks reads which filled my commute to London. These books were brilliant in there scope and interest and filled many hours on British Rail. Highly recommended and well worth another look!

  • Very small book

The book is of poor quality, although used, I expected it to be in good condition. It looks very well used, and some pages inside are damaged. Useless as a gift for someone's birthday.

Well, it’s a book. Grim story. Richmond Osmond should not be listened to.

  • Iconic Horror

If you like horror of the weirdest kind, this book is for you. Lose yourself in the most bizarre mind to have written such a tale. A great read.

  • Weird weird weird

And just when you thought it couldn’t get any weirder... it does. Excellent book. But not for the faint hearted. A staunch feminist (like myself) might get a satirical kick out of it though!
