This collection of studies of transport displays 30 years of feminine fashions, in Britain and on the continent, in everyday street scenes with a variety of public transport - from Edwardian trams to the latest buses, with comments on the girls' attire and an appendix on the vehicles' backgrounds. The fashions are not the designs in the pages of women's magazines, but the way these designs were translated into everyday wear, the brevity of certain styles (in both the length of time they were sported and the quantity of material used), and the longevity of others (daughters dressed almost the way their mothers were a quarter-of-century earlier.) As for the transport, it is seen not in formal shots, showing just a bus , isolated, but in context - in the bustle of its normal surroundings. Apart from one page of preserved buses, all the vehicles are seen in regular service, and they range from buses and trolleybuses of the mid-1930s to the late-1980s, and trams from the earliest years of this century to the present revival of electric traction. There is also a few trains, though these in fact, are quite properly not in the streets. Details of the vehicles are listed, with a postscript on continental examples. Robert E.
