Since 1970, there have been many changes in the roofing industry, in particular the change from imperial to metric which has affected the size of slates and tiles, and also the advent of cheaper, sometimes inferior, materials into the market. This has meant that a large number of quarries have closed, and the original craft of roof slating and tiling using traditional materials has in recent years gone into a decline.
