The Mosquito the Wooden Wonder
Luckily Geoffrey De Havilland was the driving force at De Havilland Aviation and he knew that the country and was going to run very short of Aviation Aluminium to build the Spitfire and other aerocraft. Luckily the Hurricane had quite a lot of fabric on the fuselage. Luckily the UK has quite a lot of factories and furniture and wood was not in so short of supplies as was Aviation Aluminium was. Considering the time taken from design to production of the very first Mosquito was an incredible feat of aeronautical engineering. "Experts" dismissed the plane as it was only made of wood it would not be able to compete with more modern planes. The Mosquito was the fastest combat plane until the jet planes came in at the tail end of the second war. When my father told me that his furniture factory made some parts for the "Wooden Wonder" I was so proud of him.
