    A great insight into Enigma

A complex book written in plain English to explain the work done in breaking the Enigma code. Very detailed and needs a lot of concentration when reading, but a superb insight into the work done at Bletchley park.

  • Most critical review

More of a specialist text than a book aimed at the general reader

If you're looking for a general book about how the heroes of Bletchley Park broke the Enigma Code during World War 2, then this probably isn't the book for you. It does contain a lot of technical detail about some of the methods used by the codebreakers at Bletchley Park, and I can see why it might have got him in trouble with HMG (even almost 40 years after the events he's describing!), but you really need to know a bit about codes & code-breaking to make sense of it. On the other hand, if you do know something about cryptography / cryptanalysis, and want to know how and why they developed the systems that they did in Hut 6 at Bletchley Park, then this is exactly the book you're looking for. There is a certain amount of "axe-grinding" / "setting the record straight" (depending on your perspective), but perhaps that is to be expected under the circumstances and it really doesn't detract too much from the main narrative of the text.

  • An important historic primary source

A great read, not only because the content is exciting but the intrigue generated by the initial efforts to keep it out of print. Sometimes I had to reread paragraphs to understand the cryptanalysis techniques but that should be expected. This book kept me engaged from beginning to end.

  • Fascinating explanation of the Enigma machine encryption and how it was broken.

I read this book in a couple of days, it is quite gripping ,describing in great detail, how the Enigma machine worked as used by the German Army and Air Force. It also explains how Ultra used the information obtained from decodes. I am now reading it again quite slowly in order to understand the code breaking methods used by the mathematical gurus at Bletchley Park

  • Welchman - An Unsung Hero

A briliiant exposition unfairly trashed by GCHQ, the NSA and the British Government.
