Waning eye for detail, perhaps. Sad.
Writer was in his last months of life and in new surroundings. Either might explain the relatively swift and sketchy retelling in the few pages given over to the historical battles.

Incredibly realistic and compelling to read
I am an avid reader of the Aubrey/Maturin books and this was the last of the collection. It is so wonderfully written you actually feel you are knowlegable enough to go back in time and join them. The best collection of books I have ever read.
