About this product

Product Information

Harriet Vane has never dared to return to her old Oxford college. Now, despite her scandalous life, she has been summoned back . . . At first she thinks her worst fears have been fulfilled, as she encounters obscene graffiti, poison pen letters and a disgusting effigy when she arrives at sedate Shrewsbury College for the 'Gaudy' celebrations. But soon, Harriet realises that she is not the only target of this murderous malice - and asks Lord Peter Wimsey to help. 'I admire her novels ... she has great fertility of invention, ingenuity and a wonderful eye for detail' P. D. James

  • Dorothy Sayers' Best Novel

Gaudy Night, set entirely in 1936 Oxford, concerns misdeeds in Harriet Vane's old College, which is Shrewsbury College, modelled on Somerville, which Sayers herself attended. (She was one of the first Oxford women graduates.) No-one is actually murdered, but someone is driven almost to suicide and two people's lives are threatened before the villainess is unmasked. Harriet Vane is called in to help,as she has some experience of detection and writes detective novels. However she is baffled and has to call in her friend and admirer, Lord Peter Wimsey. He solves the mystery and in the process wins Harriet's heart. Finally, about three novels after "Strong Poison", in which Lord Peter saves her from the gallows, Harriet says "Yes!".
