This, one of Johnston's earlier volumes covering the Rise and Fall of Beardmore Shipbuilders again gives excellent access to the superb collections of photographs held in various university's and libraries of Scotland. He illuminates his text with these superb pictures allowing anyone who has an interest in shipbuilding as a whole or the architecture of this industrial period to examine in detail a time which is just a fading and distant memory.
As with his later works Clydebank Battlecruisers and the Battleship Builders and Ships for the Nation he manages to display his own obvious enthusiasm for these bygone industries with a comprehensive knowledge of the skills and trades which made their construction (the ships) possible.
All in all an excellent volume and one that deserves to be added to any collection covering one of the industries that made Britain great.
