About this product

Product Information

Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world: as well as nearly 40 million speakers in Spain, there are at least six times that number in other parts of the world, principally, of course, in Central and South America. This book teaches you standard Castilian Spanish. 'Teach Yourself Beginner's Spanish' is the right course for you if you really want to learn Spanish but are daunted by the prospect of complicated grammar, classes and coursebooks. This book starts right from the beginning and explains everything in simple English. There are hints throughout to make learning easy and you can learn at your own pace with plenty of practice of each new point. It is a friendly introduction to the language which will help you to understand and speak Spanish sufficiently well to function effectively in basic everyday situations. The course will also offer you an insight into Spanish culture. The book is divided into two main parts. Units 1-11 introduce you to the basic structures and grammatical points you'll need in everyday situations. Each of the units contain at least one dialogue or a description by a Spanish character of some aspect of their daily life. There is a short test at the end of each unit so that you can check that you have thoroughly understood the contents of one unit before moving onto the next. Units 12-20 give you the opportunity to put into practice and consolidate the language you have learnt in the first ten units. They deal with everyday situations such as shopping, eating and travelling, and can be tackled in any order. There is a special section on pronunciation at the beginning of the book to get you started and there are plenty of exercises to practise each new point as it is introduced. By the end of the course you'll be able to communicate in a wide range of real-life situations and have all the practical information you need to enjoy your next trip to Spain. The accompanying recording is available separately or in a pack with the book. The leader in self-learning with more than 300 titles, covering all subjects. Be where you want to be with Teach Yourself.

  • a pleasant intro to spanish

A pleasant little intro to spanish. Each of the 20 lessons is quite short and even if your attention span is as short as mine you could do a lesson in a couple of short sessions of maybe 10-15 mins each. There's not too much emphasis on grammar and syntax - just a series of fairly simple everyday scenarios with attendant tips and vocabulary. If you knew what was in the book and you were a first-timer you would be able to go on holiday to Spain and get by in the lingo. It is well worth getting the couple of CDs that come with the book.
